LAS VEGAS -- Despite playing short-handed, 18th-ranked UNLV nearly pulled off two stunners at the top of the lineups but ultimately fell to powerful Duke 7-0 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex Wednesday.
The Lady Rebels, who had their six-match winning streak snapped and lost for the first time in nine 2003 home matches, fell to 8-2 overall. The Blue Devils, who were ranked No. 1 just last month and boast ranked players at five singles positions and all three doubles spots, improved to 14-1.
Duke began the day by taking two of three doubles matches for one team point. However, UNLV earned its only victory of the day as the unranked team of Paulina Janus and Agnieszka Abram stunned the nation's No. 2 team of Amanda Johnson and Julie DeRoo 9-8.
UNLV, which was playing without its No. 2 player, Gyorgyi Zsiros who is 29-1 all-time in dual matches, lost five singles matches in straight sets. However, Janus nearly earned another shocker on Court One but lost a lead in the third-set super-tiebreaker and fell to second-ranked Kelly McCain 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-8).
"Today we lost to a team that has the potential to win the national championship," UNLV head coach Kevin Cory said. "I'm proud of the way we battled even with a banged up lineup. I'm especially proud of the performance of our No. 1 doubles team. Now we get some time for players to heal."
UNLV will rest for a week before traveling to face San Diego on March 20.
