SKILLMAN, N.J. - The Duke women's tennis team received its first ever number one national ranking on Wednesday as the latest Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings for NCAA Division I were released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The Blue Devils (8-0) received all eight first-place votes from the ITA National Ranking Committee for 600 points. On Sunday, Duke captured their first title at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis., to help move them from No. 4 to No. 1 this week. The Blue Devils have been ranked No. 2 several times, most recently on Jan. 30, 2002. Coach Jamie Ashworth's squad has been ranked outside the top five just once over the past two seasons. Junior Amanda Johnson was also selected the ACC Player of the Week after guiding Duke to the team title. On the week, Johnson knocked off four ranked singles players and teamed with Julie DeRoo to win three doubles matches.
Following Duke in this week's top 10 are (in order): USTA/ITA finalist Florida, Southern California, California, Stanford, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona State, UCLA and Vanderbilt.
