Duke Hosts Maryland For Senior Night Friday...
The 10th-ranked Duke women's soccer team will host 19th-ranked Maryland in a key Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) match-up on Friday evening at Koskinen Stadium at 7:00 p.m. It will mark senior night for Gwendolyn Oxenham, Thora Helgadottir and Kelly Harris and will also be the regular season finale for Duke.
The Blue Devils enter the contest with an 11-5-1 overall, 3-3 league mark, while Maryland is 9-6-1, 2-4.
In The Rankings...
Duke is ranked 18th in the Soccerbuzz.com, 10th in Soccer America and 14th in the SoccerTimes.com polls. Maryland is ranked 19th in the Soccer America poll.
The Series...
Duke leads the overall series 10-9-2, but Maryland has won six of the last seven contests against the Blue Devils. In the last 10 matches, Maryland owns a 7-2-1 overall mark against Duke. The unranked or lower-ranked team has won the last eight games in the series. The last time Duke won against the Terrapins was on Sept. 1, 2000 at Ludwing Field in Maryland as the Blue Devils won 2-1. Ali Kopfman scored a goal late in the first half to lead the Blue Devils.
Inside Maryland...
Maryland has won two matches in a row, including a 5-1 victory over 16th-ranked Wake Forest on Oct. 25. Kimmy Francis leads the Terrapins with six goals and six assists for 18 points. Shannon Higgins-Cirovski is the head coach for Maryland.
Blue Devils Bounce Gardner-Webb...
Duke had five different players score goals on Monday as the Blue Devils defeated Gardner-Webb, 5-1, at Koskinen Stadium. Rebecca Moros, Carmen Bognanno, Kate Seibert, Lauren Simel and Sarah McCabe each scored on the night.
A Look Back At Last Year...
Duke lost 3-2 at Maryland as Kim King hit a penalty kick in the 66th minute to lead the Terrapins to the victory. For the Blue Devils, Liz Wagner and Carolyn Riggs connected on goals in the loss.
The Seibert-Ford Connection...
So far on the season, Kate Seibert has scored six goals, which ranks tied second on the Duke squad. Of those six goals, sophomore defender Carolyn Ford has assisted on five of them.
A Winning Affair...
Duke now owns 11 victories on the season, which is a new season-high for Head Coach Robbie Church at Duke. In the two previous seasons, he led Duke to eight victories in 2001 and nine victories in 2002.
Scoring Slump In ACC Play...
In six ACC contests, Duke has scored just four goals and has been shutout in three games, but own a 3-3 record. The Blue Devils have been outscored 8-4 in ACC contests. If the Blue Devils win against Maryland on Friday, it will tie for the most ACC wins since 2000 (4-3).
Senior Night...
Duke will be honoring Kelly Harris, Gwendolyn Oxenham and Thora Helgadottir on Friday before the game. All four are four-year players for the Blue Devils and have meant a lot to the program.
Harris made her first appearance of the season on Monday against Gardner-Webb as she came off the bench to play on the defensive end. She has been bothered by a leg injury for most of the season. Harris has played in 60 career games, while scoring two goals and notching two assists.
Helgadottir is one of the best goalkeepers in Duke and ACC history starting 52 of her 57 career games as a Blue Devil. She has logged 4,900:35 minutes in net, while collecting a 1.32 goals against average, 228 saves, 25 victories and 14 shutouts. Her 14 shutouts ranks second on the Duke career charts.
Oxenham is having one of her best seasons at Duke in 2003 as she owns a team-best seven assists along with two goals as she has started all 17 contests. For her career, she has started 73 of 75 matches and owns nine goals and 15 assists. Her 15 assists ranks seventh on the career charts at Duke.
High Scoring...
Through 17 contests in the 2003 season, Duke has scored 40 goals. Last season, the Blue Devils scored a total of 37 goals in 20 games played.
In the NCAA Stats...
Through games of Sunday, Duke ranked tied 43rd in the nation in goals per game (2.19).
The 200th Victory...
Head Coach Robbie Church picked up his 200th career victory on Sept. 26 as the Blue Devils shutout Davidson, 7-0. Church is in his 18th season as a head coach of collegiate men's and women's soccer and now owns a 204-129-17 record.
A Young Crowd...
Third-year head coach Robbie Church owns a roster with 16 of 22 players listed as freshmen or sophomores. The youth has served the Blue Devils well as the freshmen and sophomores own 30 of Duke's 35 goals scored.
Sophomore Carolyn Riggs leads the Blue Devils with seven goals.
Against Ranked Opponents...
So far this season, Duke is 4-3-1 against ranked teams. The Blue Devils knocked off fourth-ranked Texas on Aug. 31 by a 3-2 ledger, ninth-ranked Wake Forest (1-0) and fourth-ranked Virginia (1-0), most recently.

So far on the season, Duke has 12 different players who have scored goals and nine different players who have registered game-winning goals. The Blue Devils also have 15 different players who have collected one or more assists.
