SANDESTIN, FLA. - The final round of the 2003 ACC/SEC Challenge was rained out on Sunday to give the Duke women's golf team a 32-stroke team victory and sophomore Liz Janangelo claimed the individual title at the Par 71, 5,937 The Raven Course.
Duke finished with a 552 with 10th-ranked Florida (584), fourth-ranked Auburn (586), Wake Forest (604), North Carolina (604), N.C. State (605), Alabama (610), Florida State (611), Maryland (618), Mississippi State (624) and Kentucky (624) rounding out the field.
Janangelo led the charge of Blue Devils which all finished in the top three of the individual competition-- Anna Grzebien (2nd), Virada Nirapathpongporn (T-3rd), Leigh Anne Hardin (T-3rd) and Brittany Lang (T-3rd).
Janangelo fired a tournament and school-record tying round of 65 on Saturday and won the individual competition by six strokes over Grzebien. A West Hartford, Conn., product, Janangelo collected six birdies on Saturday to finish with her own career best round of 65. Her 36-hole total of 134 is also a new school record for the Blue Devils.
Grzebien finished in second place after shooting a 71 on Saturday and finished with a career-best two-day total of 140, while Nirapathpongporn, Hardin and Lang finished one stroke off second with a 141. Lang and Hardin each turned in one-under-par rounds on day two, while Nirapathpongporn struggled a little with a 74.
Duke will next play in the Hooter's Collegiate Match Play Championship from Nov. 2-4 in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
