Duke Routing Field At ACC/SEC Challenge; Liz Janangelo Leads Individually

SANDESTIN, FLA. - Just when you thought no more records would fall, on Saturday the top-ranked and record-breaking Duke women's golf team added a few more to the list at the ACC/SEC Challenge in Sandestin, Fla. The Blue Devils tied a school-record for the second straight day and lead by 32 strokes over the field at the Par 71, 5,937 The Raven Course.
Duke carded its second straight round of 276 on day two and owns a new school record 36-hole total of 552, which is seven strokes better than last weekend's record of 559 at the Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate. The Blue Devils lead 10th-ranked Florida (584), fourth-ranked Auburn (586), Wake Forest (604), North Carolina (604), N.C. State (605), Alabama (610), Florida State (611), Maryland (618), Mississippi State (624) and Kentucky (624).
"It is amazing how motivated everyone is on our team to do well," said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. "They are challenging each other and are feeding off the records they are breaking each week. They are still hungry and we have a very nice mix on our team right now. Individually, everyone wants to do well, but at the same time they are pulling together as a team wanting to win."
Sophomore Liz Janangelo leads the charge of Blue Devils which all rank in the top three of the individual competition-- Anna Grzebien (2nd), Virada Nirapathpongporn (T-3rd), Leigh Anne Hardin (T-3rd) and Brittany Lang (T-3rd).
Janangelo fired a tournament and school-record tying round of 65 on Saturday and leads the individual competition by six strokes over Grzebien. A West Hartford, Conn., product, Janangelo collected six birdies on the day to finish with her own career best round of 65. Her 36-hole total of 134 is also a new school record for the Blue Devils.
"I played pretty solid today," said Janangelo. "I started my round off with a three-putt bogey and then was able to birdie the next two holes. For most of the day, I didn't put myself in a bad situation as I hit 17 of 18 greens."
It marks the second straight year Janangelo heads into the final round of the ACC/SEC Challenge with a lead. Last year, Janangelo led by two strokes going into the final day but posted a round of 78 and finished tied second.
"On Sunday, I want to go out there and play a good, solid round," said Janangelo. "I am playing better now than I was last year at this time. I would like to well tomorrow and come out on top."
Grzebien sits in second place after shooting a 71 on Saturday and owns a two-day total of 140, while Nirapathpongporn, Hardin and Lang are one stroke off second with a 141. Lang and Hardin each turned in one-under-par rounds on day two, while Nirapathpongporn struggled a little with a 74.
"We are having a blast out there," said Hardin. "Everyone wants to be the best and we are pushing each other day in and day out. The team is just clicking on all cylinders and trying to make a statement after the disappointing finish last year in the NCAA Championship."
Duke will begin teeing off on Sunday in the final round at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
