More School Records Broken as Blue Devils Cruise To Stanford Title

STANFORD, CALIF. - More records were broken on Sunday as the top-ranked Duke women's golf team registered a school-record three-day total of 845 to win the Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate at the Par 72, 6,168-yard Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.
The Blue Devils carded a final round total of 286 to win by five strokes over Washington (850), while UCLA (850), California (869), New Mexico (875), Arizona (878), Vanderbilt (881), Tulsa (890), Texas A&M (890) and Oregon (892) rounded out the top 10. Duke finished the weekend with scores of 281,278,286, which marks the seventh straight round the Blue Devils have shot even par.
"This victory feels really good because there was a lot of good golf being played out there this weekend," said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. "The individual race was very exciting as we had a few players near the top."
For the second straight tournament, sophomore Liz Janangelo tied for individual medalist honors as the West Hartford, Conn., product turned in a two-over-par total of 74 on Sunday. Janangelo finished the weekend tied with Arizona's Erica Blasberg with a 209, which was seven-over-par. Her score of 74 broke a string of five consecutive rounds of even or under par.
"I am really hitting the ball well right now and getting birdie opportunities," said Janangelo. "I didn't putt very well, but I am hitting the ball close to the hole on my approach shots. As a team, we are settling in and getting in the grove of things. We are all confident in our games and it is showing with the scores we are throwing out there."
Carding the round of the day for the Blue Devils was freshman Anna Grzebien, who is from Narragansett, R.I. Grzebien had a career-best day of 68 on Sunday, which included five birdies. She finished the tournament with a three-day total of 218, which was tied 20th.
"I hit a lot of approach shots today within 15 feet and was able to take advantage of the par fives," said Grzebien. "I didn't putt well the first two days and finally was able to make some putts today."
Seniors Virada Nirapathpongporn and Leigh Anne Hardin continued their excellent play during the weekend as the duo finished fourth and tied for 11th, respectively. Nirapathpongporn, a Bangkok, Thailand native, collected rounds of 69, 71, 71 to finish with a 211, which was five-under-par. It marks her third straight top 10 finish for the Blue Devils. Hardin, of Martinsville, Ind., finished the tournament with her second straight round of 73 to conclude with a total of 215.
After notching a career-tying best round of 67 on Saturday, freshman Brittany Lang struggled today with a 77 to finish tied for 27th with a 220. Her scores of 76 on the first day and 77 on the final day were the two worst rounds of her collegiate career.
Duke will only a couple of days off this week before heading to Sandestin Resort, Fla. for the ACC/SEC Challenge at the Raven Club on Oct. 24-26.
