Duke Women's Golf Fires Seven-Under-Par Score In Round One

STANFORD, CALIF. - Three Duke golfers fired under-par rounds to lead the Blue Devils to a seven-under-par score of 281 on Friday in the first round of the Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate at the Par 72, 6,168-yard Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.
The Blue Devils sit in second place one shot behind leader Washington (280), while UCLA (283), California (289), New Mexico (290), Vanderbilt (290), Arizona (292), Tulsa (293), Oregon (296), Stanford (297) and Pepperdine (297) round out the top 11 teams.
"I am very happy with today's round," said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. "This is the competitive tournament I expected it to be. There are a lot of good players in the field this weekend."
Sophomore Liz Janangelo fired her fourth straight round of even or under par as the West Hartford, Conn., product turned in a 68 on day one. Janangelo made the turn three-under-par and finished the back nine with a one-under-par total. She is in second place, individually, behind Pepperdine's Carolina Llano (67).
Duke seniors Leigh Anne Hardin and Virada Nirapathpongporn each carded rounds of 69 on day one and are tied for third, individually. Hardin, a native of Martinsville, Ind., shot one-over-par on the front nine before turning it on over her final nine holes as she turned in a four-under-par, 32, which was the second-best back nine of the day. She continued her stellar play as Hardin collected her fifth straight round of even or under par.
Freshmen Anna Grzebien and Brittany Lang each fired rounds of 75 and 76, respectively. Grzebien is tied 46th in the individual play, while Lang is tied 55th.
Duke will begin teeing off at 10:18 (PST) on Saturday with 36 holes remaining.
