Duke's Jason (Jay) Williams will have his number 22 retired at Duke's game vs. North Carolina on Wednesday, February 5, at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Williams will be the 11th Blue Devil player to be honored at "Retirement Day" at Duke, joining Dick Groat (#10), Art Heyman (25), Jeff Mullins (44), Mike Gminski (43), Johnny Dawkins (24), Danny Ferry (35), Christian Laettner (32), Bobby Hurley (11), Grant Hill (33) and Shane Battier (31).
"Jason was one of the most explosive players in the game during his time here at Duke," said Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski. "As pleased as we were about him winning National Player of the Year honors in two different seasons, we were just as thrilled that he earned his degree from Duke in three years. He's an impressive young man who is deserving of this honor. I am proud to have coached Jason."
"I am honored that Duke has chosen to recognize me in this way," said Williams. "Duke is a place with such amazing tradition. To have a banner with my number hanging among some of the truly great players in college basketball history will be a tremendous honor for my family and me."
A two-time All-America, Williams ended his three-year Duke career ranking among the school's career leaders in scoring (2,079-sixth-tie), scoring average (19.3-sixth), field goal attempts (1,575-sixth), three-point field goals (313-second), three-point attempts (797-second), three-point percentage (.393-seventh), assists (644-third) and steals (235-fifth). He became the first Duke player - and just the seventh in college basketball history - to earn National Player of the Year honors in two different seasons. In 2001, Williams was awarded with the national award by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and in 2002, he earned National Player of the Year honors by the Associated Press, NABC, Naismith Award, U.S. Basketball Writers, Wooden Award and The Sporting News.
Williams earned a sociology degree in three years at Duke and was a member of the ACC Academic Basketball Team in 2002. He was selected by the Chicago Bulls with the second overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft.
