DURHAM, N.C.-- The Duke women's golf team had a trip of a lifetime on Tuesday as the Blue Devils visited the White House and was able to meet President George Bush. Duke was one of 10 teams who were honored at the 2002 Spring Sports Championship Day at the White House.
The Blue Devil golfers headed to Washington, D.C. early on Tuesday via U.S. Airways. Upon arrival, Duke then toured the East Potomac Park, Hains Point Golf Course, The Awakening Statue, Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, Korean War Memorial and then headed to Union Station for lunch.
After lunch the team went to the White House for the reception. The Blue Devils had a chance to shake hands with President Bush and take a picture with him. All 10 teams then moved into the East Room where President Bush honored each team. Last year's captain Candy Hannemann presented President Bush with a dozen Duke golf balls as he recognized the Blue Devils.
The team then left the White House and spent an hour walking through the National Museum of American History before going to the Pentagon City for dinner and then headed back to Durham.
It was a day everyone on the trip will remember forever as it was the first time visiting Washington, D.C. for many of the team members.
Duke doesn't have much time to rest as the Blue Devils will head to Sandestine Resort, Fla. on Wednesday for the ACC/SEC Challenge on Sept. 27-29.
