DURHAM, N.C. - The Omni Hotels College Tennis Rankings administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) have been released with the Blue Devils receiving six singles players ranked along with two doubles teams.
The six singles players ranked is the most by any other team as Stanford, Vanderbilt, Florida and California each received only four ranked players.
Duke players ranked in the preseason include-- sophomore Kelly McCain (5th), junior Amanda Johnson (T15), senior Julie DeRoo (28th), sophomore Saras Arasu (47th), sophomore Katie Blaszak (87th) and freshman Julia Smith (99th). The doubles teams ranked are Hillary Adams/McCain (9th) and DeRoo/Johnson (18th).
As a freshman at Duke last season, McCain registered a 32-8 singles record and was ranked as high as third nationally. The Tampa, Fla. native, earned ITA All-America honors in singles and doubles as McCain teamed with Adams to advance to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Individual Tournament. Johnson, a two-time ITA All-America selection, notched a 25-8 singles mark and owns a 63-12 overall record in two years with the Blue Devils.
DeRoo (Ecully, France) and Arasu (Tampa, Fla.) each had very successful seasons for Duke last year with 30-13 and 26-8 records, respectively. Blaszak, a product of Fairfax, Va., transferred from Vanderbilt after her freshman season where she was ranked as high as 55th in the ITA rankings and Smith (Windlesham, England) is the only incoming freshman for the Blue Devils.
In doubles, the Blue Devils return their top two tandems from last year. The tandem of Adams/McCain advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Individual Tournament and were selected All-America with a 14-7 record, while the duo of Johnson/DeRoo posted a 15-2 mark.
Overall, Duke returns eight letterwinners off of last year's 25-5 squad which advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Duke will open the fall season on Sept. 27-29 at the Adidas Invitational in Peachtree City, Ga.
