DURHAM, N.C. - Number 21 Duke defeated No. 15 Tennessee 2-1 Friday night at Koskinen Stadium in dramatic fashion. Duke sophomore Casey McCluskey scored the game winning goal after her first shot, just seconds earlier, was saved by Tennessee's goalkeeper Ellen Dean.
The season opener for both teams was close throughout the match, and both teams had opportunities to win. In overtime, freshman Carolyn Riggs crossed to McCluskey, who shot right in front of the goal. The ball bounced off Dean and right back to McCluskey who knocked it in for a Blue Devil victory at 93:20.
Freshman Carmen Bognanno got the first goal of her career and first of the game at 4:45, with an assist by senior Brigid Bowdell from the left side.
Neither team would score again, despite 12 shots from Duke and 10 from Tennessee, until 72:43 when Tennessee's Kim Patrick tied the game with a goal from the right side.
The Blue Devil's are 1-0 and travel to No. 5 Texas on Sunday at 8 p.m ET. Texas is ranked No. 5 by Soccer America, No. 8 by Soccer Buzz and No. 10 by NSCAA/adidas.
