Browns Summit, NC - Virada Nirapathpongporn of second-ranked Duke birded the second hole of a sudden death playoff to take individual medallist honors and help the Blue Devils to their second straight Bryan National Collegiate title in women's college golf action this afternoon from Browns Summit, NC.
The Second-ranked Duke squad fired a 290 in the third round today for an 870 final score to win the team title for the third time in the five-year history of the Bryan National. Duke won the inaugural event in 1998, and set the tournament record with an 856 in last year's tournament. The Blue Devils also won their fourth consecutive tournament of the spring with the victory today.
Nirapathpongporn tied with Georgia's Angela Jerman after three rounds at a five-under 211, forcing a sudden-death playoff. Both players parred the first hole, and Nirapathpongporn converted a short birdie attempt while Jerman's five-foot putt lipped out.
Taking runner-up honors was 13th-ranked Georgia at 882, while close behind in third was fifth-ranked Ohio State at 885. Seventh-ranked Oklahoma State took fourth at 894, and Furman moved up five spots to place fifth at 898 after carding the low round of the day at 287. Tournament co-hosts 17th-ranked Wake Forest placed sixth at 901, while UNC Greensboro finished 16th at 942. ACC foes North Carolina moved up to seventh at 908 and NC State took eighth at 909.
Two players tied for third, four strokes out of first. Candy Hannemann of Duke and Ashley Lowery of Ohio State both shot 215 for the tournament. Rounding out the top five was Georgia's Summer Sirmons with a 218 54-hole tally.
Other Blue Devil results were, sophomore Leigh Anne Hardin with a tied for 15th place finish after finishing with a 76 on Sunday and freshman Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh recorded the third-best round of the day for the Blue Devils with a 73. A native of Lausanne, Switzerland, Aazam-Zanganeh rebounded on the weekend from a rocky start to finish tied for 32nd. Junior Kristina Engstrom had a 78 on Sunday to finish tied for 23rd.
Duke will look to keep its winning streak alive as the Blue Devils will next travel to Clemmons, N.C. on April 19-21 for the ACC Championship. The Blue Devils have won six consecutive ACC Championships.
