DURHAM, N.C. - Duke University women's basketball head coach Gail Goestenkors announced on Tuesday the signing of Jessica Foley to attend Duke University and play basketball in 2002-03.
"I am really excited about the addition of Jessica," said Goestenkors. "She is a player that gives us great versatility. At 6-0 she can play all perimeter positions, has tremendous range on her shot, can see the floor very well, is very strong and can post up. Her understanding of the game and her experiences will help her make an immediate impact on our team."
A 6-0 guard from Australia, Foley has a great deal of international playing experience as she has played on the Australian under-20 World Championship team in 2001 and Australian under-20 International tour in France and New Zealand in 2000 and 2001. She has played for the Australia Institute of Sport (AIS) for the past two years and traveled to the United States in 1999, 2000 and 2001 on tours with AIS.
Foley is a three-time All-Australian team selection and four-time Victorian State team selection. She has been nominated twice for the Albury-Wodonga Young Achiever of the Year. The 19-year-old is expected to play on the Australian under-22 squad, which will travel to China in May.
This past summer, Foley played on the AIS team which defeated the Blue Devils twice on Duke's 14-day Australia tour. Foley averaged 21.5 points and 3.5 steals in two games against the Blue Devils. She recorded a game-high 29 points on 10-of-11 field goals and 5-of-5 three-pointers in the first game and scored 14 points on three 3-pointers in the second contest. Foley hit 8-of-10 three-pointers in the two games against the Blue Devils.
Foley joins first team Parade All-America Brooke Smith (Marin Catholic, Calif./San Anselmo HS), second team Parade All-America Mistie Bass (Parker, Wisc./Janesville Parker HS), second team Parade All-America Lindsey Harding (Tomball, Texas/CY-Fair HS) and Caitlin Howe (Rochester, N.Y./Fairport HS) as one of the top rated recruiting classes in the nation.
The 2002-03 Blue Devils were ranked second nationally in the latest "Very Early Bird Preseason Top 50" produced by WomensCollegeHoops.com on April 16.
"This is one of the best classes we have ever signed," said Goestenkors. "It will give us great versatility having several perimeter players that can play all five positions. The class will give us much needed depth, strength in the post position and tremendous shooting ability from the guard spots."
