CLEMMONS, N.C. -- For the seventh consecutive year, the Duke women's golf team took home the ACC Championship title on Sunday with a 29-stroke victory at the Par 72, 6,411 yard Salem Glen Country Club in Clemmons, N.C.
Senior Candy Hannemann fired a final round 73 to take individual medallist honors with a three-day total of even par 216. It marks the fourth year in a row a Blue Devil has won individual medallist honors at the championship. Hannemann, a native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, adds another prestigious honor to her resume that includes-- 2001 NCAA Individual Champion, 2001 U.S. Open Low Amateur and five collegiate victories.
The Blue Devils finished the tournament with an ACC Tournament record three-day total of 866. Rounding out the field was Wake Forest (895), N.C. State (909), Florida State (911), North Carolina (921) and Maryland (939). Duke's ACC record 866 total is the best since the Blue Devils carded an 871 in the 2000 championships at Salem Glen Country Club.
All five Blue Devils finished in the top seven individually with first and second round leaders Virada Nirapathpongporn (Bangkok, Thailand) and Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) finishing the day with a 76 and 79, respectively. Nirapathpongporn finished tied for second with a 217 and now owns a medallist honors and runner-up honors in two years at the ACC Championship. Engstrom finished in tied for fourth place (220).
Freshman Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh (Lausanne, Switzerland) carded a 74 on Sunday and finished in sixth place (221) and Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) turned in a 75 to finish in tied for seventh (222).
Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks now owns nine ACC Championships in 19 years with the Blue Devils.
The second-ranked Blue Devils will next play in the NCAA Regionals on May 9-11 in Baton Rouge, La. at the University Club Golf Course.
