DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke women's tennis freshman Kelly McCain earned ACC Player of the Week honors on Tuesday after guiding the Blue Devils to three league victories this past week. The Blue Devils also clinched their 14th ACC regular season title in the last 15 years.
McCain went 3-0 in singles action defeating top-ranked Bea Bielik of Wake Forest (7-6, 2-1 ret.), 26th-ranked Alix Lacelarie of Clemson (6-1, 6-4) and 28th-ranked Marlene Mejia of North Carolina (6-1, 6-4). The Tampa, Fla., native has now won 18 matches against ranked opponents, is 7-3 against players ranked in the top 10 and has knocked off the top-ranked and second-ranked singles players during the season.
In doubles action, McCain teamed with Hillary Adams to go 3-0 on the week. The duo knocked off top-ranked Bielik/Bergman of Wake Forest (9-7), 26th-ranked Jayet/Lacelarie of Clemson (8-5) and defeated Mejia/Rotondi of North Carolina (8-3).
It marks the second time this season McCain has earned ACC Player of the Week accolades as she won Co-Player of the Week on March 25. She owns a 28-6 singles mark on the season.
Duke (21-3, 8-0 ACC) will take on N.C. State in the first round of the ACC Championship on Thursday at 1:00 PM in Raleigh, N.C. at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center.
