DURHAM, N.C. -- For the 18th consecutive match, the fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team won an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) contest on Thursday against fourth-ranked Wake Forest at the Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C. The Blue Devils took a 6-1 victory over the Demon Deacons to improve to 19-3 on the season and 6-0 in ACC action. Duke has now won 132 out of the last 133 ACC matches. Wake Forest falls to 18-4, 4-2 in ACC play.
The Blue Devils kicked off doubles action by cruising to an 8-2 victory at the second position as the tandem of Amanda Johnson/Julie DeRoo downed Karin Coetzee/Maren Haus. Wake Forest responded with an 8-4 win at number three by Katie Martzolf/Danielle Schwartz over Susie Abromeit/Katie Granson. The loss for the Blue Devil duo was their first of the season (11-1).
In the featured doubles match at the number one position, Wake Forest's top-ranked Janet Bergman/Bea Bielik jumped out to a 5-1 lead over Hillary Adams/Kelly McCain. The Blue Devil duo would not give up as McCain/Adams battled back to take the doubles point for the Blue Devils with a 9-7 victory. The loss for Bielik/Bergman was their first dual match loss of the season (18-1) and only their third loss of the season (31-3).
In singles action, Wake Forest evened the score 1-1 as Coetzee quickly downed Ioana Plesu 6-3, 6-1 at the fourth slot. At center court, third-ranked McCain was matched up with first-ranked Bielik. It marked a rematch of the Nov. 10 match when Bielik easily defeated McCain 6-3, 6-1 in the National Indoor Championships. McCain took control early on as the freshman from Tampa, Fla., took the first set 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreaker. In the second set, McCain was cruising along when Bielik suffered a sprained ankle and was forced to retire to put the Blue Devils up 2-1 in the match. The loss for Bielik was her first dual match loss of the season (18-1) and the victory for McCain improved her to 26-6 on the season.
Duke quickly took a 3-1 lead as freshman 77th-ranked Saras Arasu downed 108th-ranked Martzolf (6-3, 6-2) at number five. Sophomore 30th-ranked Johnson next clinched the victory for the Blue Devils as she battled back to take a 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory over 16th-ranked Bergman. In the final two singles matches, Duke's Granson knocked off Schwartz (6-1, 4-6, 6-2) and DeRoo defeated Haus (7-5, 6-4).
Duke will host 39th-ranked Clemson on Saturday and seventh-ranked North Carolina on Sunday at 1:00 PM both days. Sunday's match against North Carolina will mark senior day for Ioana Plesu.
