Mike Krzyzewski, head coach of the Duke University men's basketball team, underwent successful hip joint replacement surgery this morning at Duke University Hospital.
Krzyzewski, 55, was resting comfortably following the two-hour procedure on his right hip, said Thomas Parker Vail, M.D., director of adult reconstructive surgery at Duke University Medical Center, who performed the surgery. Krzyzewski is listed in good condition.
"I'm very pleased with how the entire procedure went and with his early recovery. He's feeling great. He was sitting up in bed this afternoon and we anticipate that he will be out of bed by tomorrow," Vail said.
Krzyzewski had a similar procedure performed on his left hip on April 4, 1999. Both procedures were necessitated by arthritis. Additional information on hip joint replacement surgery can be found at http://news.mc.duke.edu/news/article.php?id=5420.
Vail said Krzyzewski could be released from the hospital within four days.
Krzyzewski owns a 637-227 career record while attaining a 564-168 mark at Duke. He and the Blue Devils went to 11 consecutive NCAA Tournament berths from 1984 to 1994 and have been in the Tournament 18 of the last 19 years. Overall, he has taken Duke to postseason play in 19 of his 22 years in Durham and is the winningest active coach in NCAA Tournament play with a 58-15 record. His 58 tournament wins rank second all-time in NCAA history.
Krzyzewski has led Duke to three national championships (1991, 1992 and 2001), making him one of only four coaches in NCAA history to earn three or more NCAA titles. In addition to Krzyzewski, only John Wooden (10), Adolph Rupp (4) and Bob Knight (3) have accomplished that feat.
In all, Krzyzewski has been named the National Coach of the Year 11 times in eight different seasons, including UPI and Chevrolet (1986), Naismith (1989), the NABC (1991), The Sporting News and Naismith (1992), Basketball Times (1997), the NABC and Naismith (1999), Chevrolet (2000) and the Victor Awards (2001). He was named Coach of the Decade for the 1990s by the NABC and was the second recipient of the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award.
On Oct. 5, 2001, Krzyzewski was presented by his college coach Knight as one of three members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2001 (joining Temple's John Chaney and former NBA star Moses Malone as 2001 inductees).
