BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. -- For the second consecutive tournament, the third-ranked Duke women's golf team finished in first place on Sunday at the Lady Gamecock Classic in Blythewood, S.C. The Blue Devils claimed both the team and individual titles as freshman Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh notched her first collegiate victory at the Par 72, 5,996 yard The University Club.
Aazam-Zanganeh, a native of Lausanne, Switzerland, fired a career-best one-under-par three-round total of 215 to claim the title. She finished the 54-hole tournament tied with South Carolina's Kristy McPherson and notched a par on the first playoff hole to pick up the victory.
"I didn't play very well the first semester because everything was very new, but I kept working very hard," said Aazam-Zanganeh. "This semester my hard work is beginning to pay off and I feel a lot more comfortable on the course."
Duke finished with a season-best 54-hole total of 874 with Texas (886), South Carolina (895), New Mexico (902) and Vanderbilt (907) rounded out the top five.
"Niloufar's play was fantastic," said head coach Dan Brooks. "Things went very well for her the first two days, but today her putts weren't falling like before. She is playing some really good golf right now."
Sophomore Virada Nirapathpongporn (Bangkok, Thailand) finished third individually with a season-best three-day total of 216. Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) finished fifth individually as she tied a season-best with a four-over-par 220.
Candy Hannemann shot a team-best 73 on Sunday and finished in tied for 19th overall with a eight-over-par 224. Kristina Engstrom struggled today with an 80.
Duke will next play on Mar. 25-26 at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Classic in Austin, Texas. In two tournaments in the spring, Duke has won both.
