Duke Head Coach Gail Goestenkors:
"Overall, I was pleased with our performance, especially in the second half. I wasn't real happy with the way we played in the first half. I thought we started off strong and I thought we lost our focus. I was a little disappointed in our effort overall and our focus in the first half. I thought that in the second half we had great focus for twenty minutes. We did a good job on the defensive end of the floor. We pushed the ball in transition and also executed better in the front court."
"I guess when we put our minds to it, I think we can be a very, very good team, a very focused team. I think we have 10 very good players that can play and at times I think when I substitute, I am still learning about our substitute pattern. When we get a big lead early and I mass substitute, I think we tend to lose our focus and think that the game is over. So I think that we need to be more careful with our substitutions.
On the smaller Charleston Southern line-up: "There were some smaller girls on me, so I was able to go inside. Normally with a bigger line-up we can post up, whether it be myself, or Mistie (Bass) or Michelle (Matyasovsky). Usually there is always another post player with me."
On asserting herself in the last 16 minutes: "I think coming out Coach G wanted us to become more intense defensively and I think we started out with a lot of fouls. I figured that I had to step it up. Coach G put me in at point guard and I turned it up on the defensive end."
Charleston Southern Head Coach Stephanie Yelton:
"This game tonight was our program and university taking that next step. This is the first time in our school's history that any team from Charleston Southern has played the number one team in the country. So for us it is a great honor to be here in Durham and to be at Duke University and playing such an outstanding women's basketball team."
"I think our players played extremely hard. Although we do have five seniors on the team, we are a very young team. For our team to come into the gym and lay it on the line and still fall short, they are going to grow from that and it will make us a better team later in the season."
"Duke's team is very athletic. They get up and down the court extremely fast and it is one of those things that you really can't prepare for. They are a good passing team. They get the ball out of bounds and in bounds quickly and know how to find their open players. They are a tremendous squad and I think they are going to make a great run for the national championship this year."
On Beard "Beard, I think, is the best player that has played in the ACC. She has the speed and quickness of Marion Jones but the skill level of, if not beyond, that of Dawn Staley. She is going to go on to have an outstanding professional basketball career."
Senior Katie LaRue:
"I am just proud of how hard our team came out and how well we played. We did what we were told to do and what we went over in the scouting report. I thought we executed really well considering who we were playing and how talented they are."
On Beard "I have never seen anyone like her. I mean, there are a lot of good players but she does it all. She is so athletic and makes everything look so easy."
