Duke's Michael Yani defeated Vanderbilt's Chad Harris in straight sets to advance to the second round of the 2002 ITA Men's All-American Tennis Tournament held at The Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Yani upended Harris, 6-3, 6-4, and will face fourth-seeded Amer Delic of Illinois in the second round on Friday at 9:00 a.m. Delic advanced with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Florida's Troy Hahn on Thursday.
Highlighting first round play was Virginia Tech's 50th-ranked Saber Kadiri upsetting Kentucky's top-ranked Jesse Witten, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Witten is the first No. 1 seed to lose in the opening round at the All-American since 1997.
Thirteen of the top 16 seeds in singles picked up wins on Thursday to advance to Friday's second round including No. 2 Tobias Clemens of UCLA, No. 3 Benjamin Becker of Baylor, Delic and No. 5 Oliver Maiberger of San Diego State.
