PALM SPRINGS, CALIF. -- The Duke women's tennis team picked up eight singles victories over the weekend at the Adidas Tennis Classic played at the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens in Palm Springs, Claif.
Both ninth-ranked Amanda Johnson and 49th-ranked Kelly McCain each advanced to the quarterfinals of the Flight A bracket. Johnson received a bye in the first round, defeated Annika Benstsson (Florida) 6-2, 6-2 and then fell to 44th-ranked Vilmarie Castellvi (Tennessee) 2-6, 2-6. McCain picked up victories over Courtney Perkins (Portland) 6-1, 7-5 and Cindy Sureephong (Arizona State) before falling to fifth-ranked Sara Walker (UCLA) 7-6, 3-6, 3-6.
Senior Ioana Plesu highlighted the Flight B consolation bracket advancing to the finals of singles play with victories over Sanja Indic (Portland), Stacy Kokx (Northwestern) and Brooke Cordell (Tennessee). The finals match was not played. Other singles action is listed below.
In doubles play, Duke's teams of Johnson/Susie Abromeit and Saras Arasu/Plesu each won their lone match played. Johnson/Abromeit defeated Ruth Barnes/Marine Piriou (Northwestern) 8-1, while Arasu/Plesu knocked off Lisa Bessman/Sanja Indic (Portland) 8-4. Duke's other team of Hillary Adams/Olga Gvozdenovic won their first match by default over McElroy/Mues (Wisconsin) and then fell to Megan Bradley/Lauren Fisher (UCLA) 1-8 and Marine Piriou/Jessica Rush (Northwestern) 3-8.
"Overall, we didn't play well," said Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth. "We went out there expecting to make a statement early in the season. Hopefully, in the next week we can work on some things and come back and play well in the Riviera All-American."
Duke will next travel to Pacific Palisades, Calif. for the Riviera All-American beginning on October 6.
