Auburn, Wash. - The 2001 NCAA Fall Preview wasn't meant to be finished as heavy rain hit the course Wednesday for the second consecutive day and play was called at 12:05 (PT) at the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash. The results through the second round were announced the final.
Duke University finished tied for 11th overall with a two-day total of 606 (+30), after shooting a 301 on Monday and 305 in the second round. Texas and Auburn finished tied for first in the team standings with 591 (+15).
Before play was suspended on Tuesday, Duke had rebounded to move up to tied for sixth place in the team standings. Then, Wednesday morning the Blue Devils came out and struggled as they turned in a 305 in the second round.
Freshman Virada Nirapathpongporn, who was in second place individually after play was suspended Tuesday came out Wednesday morning and shot six-over-par to finish with a 78 in the second round. The native of Bangkok, Thailand, finished with a 148 to place tied for 17th. Leigh Anne Hardin notched a 77 in the second round and finished with a 151 (T-32).
Freshman Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh (Lausanne, Switzerland) and junior Maria Garcia-Estrada (Tenerife, Spain) each turned in Duke's best second rounds as each recorded a 75. Aazam-Zanganeh finished with a 155 (T-62), while Garcia-Estrada totaled a 158 (T-82). Junior Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) concluded with an 81 in the second round to finish with a total of 158 (T-82).
The finish for the Blue Devils breaks a streak of two consecutive years Duke has won the NCAA Fall Preview. Duke traveled to Auburn, Washington without senior Candy Hannemann, who will miss the fall season due to ankle surgery. Hannemann is the reigning NCAA Individual Champion.
Duke will next travel down Tobacco Road to compete in the Tar Heel Invitational on October 5-7 at the Finley Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
