Duke's Phillip King is ranked second nationally in the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national singles rankings released on Thursday.
King went 23-8 last year in singles and was honored as the ACC, ITA Regional and ITA National Freshman of the Year. The Long Beach, Calif., native also earned All-ACC and All-America accolades and helped Duke to a 24-4 overall record, the ACC Championship and an NCAA Quarterfinal berth. King finished the 2001 campaign ranked ninth nationally in singles.
Georgia's Matias Boeker, a junior and the top-ranked player in the country, captured the NCAA "triple crown" last season, guiding Georgia to the NCAA team title while sweeping the national singles and doubles titles as well.
Boeker and King are followed by Georgia's Bo Hodge, Pepperdine's Al Garland, Stanford's K.J. Hippensteel, Mississippi's Alex Hartman, UCLA's Jean-Julian Rojer, Southern California's Andrew Park, Alabama's Maxim Belski and California's John Paul Fruttero.
The men's and women's preseason rankings were voted on by separate 10-member ITA National Ranking Committees. The next individual ranking will be after the fall season in December. The preseason team rankings will be released prior to the start of the dual match portion of the season in January.
