DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke women's soccer team (1-0, 0-0 ACC), fresh off a 3-0 victory over Davidson on Friday, will open Atlantic Coast Conference action Sunday at 1 p.m. as the Blue Devils host Maryland (1-0, 0-0 ACC) at Koskinen Stadium.
On Friday evening, junior forward Alison Sanders scored two goals as 17th-ranked Duke made first-year head coach Robbie Church's debut a successful one with the shutout victory over the visiting Wildcats in the season-opener for both teams.
Sanders put the Blue Devils ahead 1-0 with an unassisted goal at the 21:45 mark of the opening half. Sanders' second goal, which came off an assist from senior forward Sarah Pickens, pushed the lead to 2-0 less than 13 minutes into the second half. Sanders now has nine career goals, with four serving as game-winners.
Junior forward Brigid Bowdell accounted for the final margin with an unassisted goal at the 85:57 mark.
Sophomore goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir was credited with one save in the match, pushing her career shutout total to 6.5.
Duke holds a 10-7-2 overall record against Maryland. The Blue Devils defeated the Terps 2-1 early last season at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md.
