DURHAM, N.C. - Jeremy Loomis has been named assistant women's tennis coach at Duke University announced on Friday by Blue Devil head coach Jamie Ashworth. Loomis arrives at Duke from the University of Maryland after serving as head coach of the men's tennis program for the past five years.
"I am very excited about coming to Duke," said Loomis. "I have seen the Blue Devils for the past five years and know what a great program coach Ashworth has built. The team is very talented and I look forward to helping Duke win its first national championship."
Since 1997, Loomis acted as the assistant coach of the women's tennis team and as associate head coach of the men's team at Maryland under Jim Laitta.
"Jeremy will be very good for our program," said Ashworth. "He has head coaching experience and wants to be a coach, which is something we were looking for in hiring an assistant."
Loomis was a four-year letterwinner at Maryland, playing both the No. 1 singles and doubles positions. He was named team MVP in his senior season of 1993. He graduated from Maryland in 1993 with a degree in English and then completed his master's degree in exercise physiology from Miami University in Ohio in 1995.
After graduating from Maryland, Loomis competed on the pro tour and achieved a world ranking in doubles.
"Jeremy was a very good doubles player at Maryland," said Ashworth. "Our team has lacked success on the doubles court the past couple of years so he will be a very valuable asset for our team in playing for a national championship in 2002."
Loomis replaces Chad Skorupka, who took the head women's tennis coaching job at Yale. The Blue Devils return five letterwinners off of a 27-2 squad, which advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
