DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke University women's soccer team opens the 2001 season when it hosts Davidson at Koskinen Stadium on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
The game will mark head coach Robbie Church's first match as head coach of the Blue Devils. Church, who replaces 13-year coach Bill Hempen, is only the second coach in the history of Duke women's soccer.
"We're really excited about getting the season started," said Church. "We had an excellent preseason and the women worked very hard. Davidson is a well-coached and well-disciplined team that always plays us tough."
The Blue Devils return four of their top-five scorers from the 2000 season. Senior forward Sarah Pickens led Duke in goals (nine) and was tied for the team lead in points last season (21) with junior midfielder Carly Fuller (eight goals, five assists). Sophomore forward Gwendolyn Oxenham had 15 points (five goals, five assists), while junior forward Alison Sanders had seven goals on the season.
In goal, Duke will look to sophomore Thora Helgadottir to continue her excellent play from last season when she allowed only 20 goals for a goals-against-average of 1.26. After her stellar freshman campaign, Helgadottir was named honorable mention All-America by both Collegesoccer.com and Soccerbuzz.com, as well as Freshman All-America by Soccerbuzz.com.
Duke carries a 5-0 all-time record vs. Davidson. In their last meeting, which came in 2000, the Blue Devils defeated the Wildcats by a score of 3-1.
