DURHAM, N.C. - Duke women's tennis head coach Jamie Ashworth announced on Monday the additions of Julie DeRoo (Ecully, France) and Saras Arasu (Tampa, Fla.) to the 2001-02 roster.
DeRoo is a transfer from The University of Mississippi where she played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the past two seasons. As a sophomore DeRoo was ranked as high as seventh nationally in singles before concluding the season ranked 34th nationally. She notched a 16-13 overall singles record and an 11-7 record at the No. 1 singles position. DeRoo qualified for the NCAA Individual Championship for the second consecutive season in 2001 and will have two years of eligibility at Duke.
"Julie will be a great addition to our program," said Ashworth. "She brings two years of collegiate experience and a great deal of international experience. With three freshman on the team and having lost three of our top six players, this will add a jolt of experience, which will help us right away. Julie played No. 1 singles in the SEC, which is probably the toughest conference in the country. She has played against the best competition there is. She wanted to come to a place where she felt she could help win a national championship."
Arasu is a native of Tampa, Fla. and is a 2001 graduate of Tampa Preparatory School. As a junior at Tampa Preparatory she won the 1A Florida High School State Championship singles title and was the 1A Player of the Year. Her sophomore year she finished runner-up in the 3A Florida High School State Championship in singles. As a senior, Arasu played on the International Tennis Federation circuit.
Along with DeRoo and Arasu, the Blue Devils will welcome four newcomers in 2001-02 as Kelly McCain (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Susie Abromeit (Boca Raton, Fla.) committed to Duke earlier last season. The Blue Devils return five letterwinners from last season-- All-America Amanda Johnson, junior Hillary Adams, junior Katie Granson, junior Prim Siripipat, and senior Ioana Plesu.
"With adding these four newcomers our lineup will be an absolute dogfight, which will make our team better by pushing each other daily," said Ashworth.
The Blue Devils will play in individual tournaments this fall and then will begin dual match play on Jan. 25 versus Marquette.
