DURHAM, N.C. - Duke University women's tennis head coach Jamie Ashworth announced on Tuesday Chad Skorupka has joined the Blue Devil program as assistant coach. Skorupka comes to Duke from Wake Forest, where he has been assistant coach for the past two years.
"I appreciate the opportunity I had for the past two years at Wake Forest," said Skorupka. "Now, I am very excited about heading to Duke and helping the Blue Devils win their first national title."
Skorupka, a 1994 graduate of Penn State, helped guide Wake Forest to a 42-12 overall record and two NCAA Tournament appearances in two years. Prior to his stint at Wake Forest, he served as the assistant women's tennis coach at his alma mater, Penn State, for three seasons. While at Penn State he was honored with two prestigious coaching awards -- the 1998 ITA Eastern Region Assistant Coach of the Year as well as the 1999 USTA/Central Pennsylvania District Coach of the Year.
"Chad is a great addition to our program," said Ashworth. "He brings a lot of experience both on and off the court. He has experience working with a team at a national level and in his first year at Wake Forest he led them to a national ranking of second in the country. Chad was instrumental of the recruiting of a lot of the Wake Forest players."
Before heading back to Penn State, Skorupka worked for the United States Tennis Association (USTA) in Indianapolis, Ind. as the Play Tennis America Coordinator for the USTA/Western section, an area covering Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin. He then served as the USTA's District Coordinator of Player Development for the Middle States section, covering Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and West Virginia.
Skorupka received his bachelor's degree in international politics from PSU in 1994 and then went on to earn a master's degree in counseling education from the University in June of 1999.
"I have known Jamie [Ashworth] for the past few years now and respect the job he has done with the Duke program," said Skorupka. "This will be a new start with Duke as the team welcomes four new players to the roster. I am proud and excited about this opportunity to be a part of the Duke tennis program."
Skorupka replaces Farley Taylor, who spent the past two seasons as assistant coach at Duke. The Blue Devils return five letterwinners off of a 27-2 squad, which advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
