DURHAM, N.C. - Highlighted by three nationally televised games, the 2001-02 Duke women's basketball non-conference schedule was released on Wednesday. Possibly the toughest schedule since head coach Gail Goestenkors' arrived in 1992-93 boasts 11 games, including nationally televised contests against Tennessee, Louisiana Tech, and Texas Tech.
"I am extremely excited about our non-conference schedule for next season," said Goestenkors. "This is perhaps the toughest non-conference schedule we have ever played. This was done by design because we knew we were going to be very young and we wanted to play the very best teams in the country to see how we stack up, learn, and grow. Those experiences will only serve to better us in the long run. Our goal is to be the best team possible come tournament time."
The Blue Devils will open the 2001-02 season by hosting the State Farm Classic at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C. on Nov. 11. Duke will battle Texas Tech on ESPN and Oklahoma will face NCAA Finalist Purdue on ESPN2 in a doubleheader. All four teams are expected to be ranked in the top 15 in the preseason.
Duke will also travel to Lake Buena Vista, Fla. to compete in the Disney Honda Elite. The Blue Devils will take on Louisiana Tech, which advanced to the Elite Eight a year ago, on Dec. 2 televised by ESPN2 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. The game will be a part of a doubleheader as Tennessee will go up against Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) foe N.C. State in the other contest.
The Blue Devils will also play in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Ga. against Tennessee on Dec. 27 televised on FOX Sports. It will be a rematch of the 1999 Elite Eight game in which the Blue Devils downed the Lady Vols (69-63) to advance to Duke's first NCAA Final Four in program history. The game will be played at the Phillips Arena.
For the 14th consecutive year, the Blue Devils will host the Duke Women's Basketball Classic benefiting the Ronald McDonald House on Nov. 24 & 25. Duke has won the title the last nine years in this great event. The teams competing this year will be Missouri, South Carolina, and Davidson.
Other non-conference home games include Elon, UNC Greensboro, and Liberty along with road contests at Toledo, Charlotte, and Georgetown. Of the 11 teams on Duke's non-conference schedule, Texas Tech, Louisiana Tech, Tennessee, Toledo, and Missouri advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season.
The ACC slate will be released in August.
