Duke Women's Soccer Coach Bill Hempen Resigns

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke women's soccer coach Bill Hempen, who started the Blue Devils' program in 1988, has resigned to accept the head coaching position at the University of Colorado. The resignation is effective immediately.
"Bill Hempen started the women's soccer program at Duke and has been an integral part of the growth of the program," said Duke Director of Athletics Joe Alleva. "We wish him well and thank him for his 15 years of service to Duke. I will miss him."
"Duke has been such an important part of my life which makes this decision very difficult," said Hempen. "I've grown into a man here. But as you become a man, you have other responsibilities such as family. This decision is based on the happiness of my family. I have many great friends and great memories here and I will forever be a Duke fan."
Hempen has been at Duke since 1986. He started as an assistant coach for the men's team before becoming the first women's head coach at Duke in 1988. Since then, Hempen has led the Blue Devils to nine NCAA Tournament appearances and a 162-100-16 overall record (.612) in 13 seasons. He was named the NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 1992 after leading the Blue Devils to a school-record 17 victories and an appearance in the NCAA Championship Game. A three-time ACC Coach of the Year selection, Hempen's teams averaged more than 12 wins per season and finished ranked among the nation's top 20 teams nine times.
Alleva said that a national search for the next Duke women's soccer coach will begin immediately.
