Duke's Battier To Grizzlies With 6th Pick

NEW YORK - Shane Battier, the forward who led Duke to the 2001 NCAA Championship, was taken with the sixth pick overall by the Vancouver Grizzlies in the 2001 NBA Draft on June 27.
Battier was a consensus National Player of the Year in 2001 and a unanimous first team All-America selection. He averaged 19.9 points and 7.2 rebounds last season, while leading the top-ranked Blue Devils in several statistical categories. A three-time National Defensive Player of the Year, Battier was the first player in ACC history - and fourth in college history - to finish with at least 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, 200 blocks, 200 assists and 200 steals.
"Now it's time to go to work," Battier said following the selection. "I'm going to give the Grizzlies my best effort and try to contribute immediately."
Battier became the 21st player from Duke to be a first-round draft selection and the fifth in the past three years. The sixth selection was the highest by a Duke player since Elton Brand was drafted first overall by the Chicago Bulls in 1999. In 10 of the last 13 seasons, at least one Duke player has been selected in the NBA Draft.
