CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A day after freshman Virada Nirapathpongporn fired a school-tying record 65, junior Candy Hannemann posted a four-under-par round of 68 on Friday to lead the top-ranked Duke women's golf team to a seven shot lead going into the final round at the NCAA East Regional. The regional is being played at the Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Both Nirapathpongporn and Hannemann head into the final round leading the individual competition six-under-par and four-under-par respectively. Nirapathpongporn posted a 73 on day two (65-73=138), while Hannemann notched four birdies and no bogies for her 68 (72-68=140).
As a team, Duke fired a 291 on Friday and lead the Regional by seven strokes (577) over Auburn University (584). Rounding out the top five include-- Georgia (298), South Carolina (293), and New Mexico (303).
Senior Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn.) rebounded Friday with a 74 and is in tied for 25th place for the Blue Devils. Freshman Leigh Anne Hardin is in tied for 20th after notching a 76 on Friday, while sophomore Kristina Engstrom is tied for 63rd after struggling with an 82.
The Blue Devils will tee off beginning at 8:30 AM on Saturday for the final round. The top eight finishers will advance to play in the NCAA Championship on May 22-25 at Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
Head Coach Dan Brooks
"We are playing regionals and are only one over par, so that is really good.
Kalen had a better round today as she hit be ball much better today. I am
very proud of what Candy and Virada have been doing."
"I think we are right about where we need to be at this stage and if we get another hot day tomorrow it will be a good send off toward the championship."
"We have a couple of pretty good numbers here. We can go lower than this and all know it. We are not really playing the kind of golf we are capable of. I know of three players that are a lot higher than they want to be right now. Who knows we might be in the 270's on Saturday, because we have three players that are not as low as they know they can shoot."
Duke's Candy Hannemann
"I hit the ball really well today, especially my irons. I putted well, but
they just didn't go in as much as I wanted them to.
"We are really excited about our play this tournament."
