Nirapathpongporn Fires 65; Duke Leads NCAA East Regional After Day One

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Duke freshman Virada Nirapathpongporn (Bangkok, Thailand) fired a school and course record-tying round of 65 on day one of the NCAA East Regionals Thursday to lead the top-ranked Blue Devils to first place at the Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Nirapathpongporn posted a 32 on the front nine and 33 on the back as she equaled former Duke great Jenny Chuasiriporn's round of 65 on May 20, 1998 in the first round of the NCAA Championship. It marked the 12th time this season Nirapathpongporn has notched a round of even or under par in competition. The 65 tied the course record held by North Carolina men's golfer Ramon Bescansa.
As a team, Duke posted a two-under-par round of 286 and leads by eight strokes over Auburn (294) after the first round of competition. Rounding out the top six include Georgia (297), New Mexico (299), San Jose State (299), and TCU (302).
All five Blue Devil golfers turned in rounds of no higher than 77 led by Nirapathpongporn's 65. She leads the individual competition by five strokes over Laura Henderson of Georgia. Nirapathpongporn posted one eagle, five birdies, and no bogey's on the day. She is coming off winning the ACC Championship on April 22 in Orlando, Fla.
Duke teammates Candy Hannemann (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is tied for fourth place after firing an even par round of 72 and freshman Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) is tied for 13th with a 74. Sophomore Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) posted a 75 and is tied for 20th, while senior Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn.) is tied for 43rd with a 77.
The Blue Devils will tee off on Friday beginning at 11:50 AM off the 10th tee with two rounds remaining.
