It marks the 14th-consecutive year the Blue Devils will play for the ACC Championship and Duke will look to make it 14 victories in a row against second-seeded Wake Forest on Sunday at 11:00 AM.
"We got off to a great start today and that was the key to the match," said Duke Head Coach Jamie Ashworth. "When you are up 4-0 on the first three courts, it puts to much pressure on another team. That has been our goal all year and we reminded them of it today. You give a team no sense of belief at all if you get off to a quick start. We gave them nothing to feed off of today."
Duke quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead as the Blue Devils tallied victories at the number one and three positions. The number one duo of Ansley Cargill/Megan Miller downed Samantha Schoeffel/Jessica Balbuena (8-3) and the number three team of Kathy Sell/Katie Granson finished off Natalie Carratala/Marina Raic (8-1). After Duke won two doubles matches, the number two match was abandoned.
In singles action, Duke freshman Amanda Johnson (Bettendorf, Iowa) remained undefeated in dual match play this season with a victory over Schoeffel (6-0, retired). Schoeffel turned her ankle and could not finish the match after the first set. Johnson, who is currently ranked 13th nationally, improved to 22-0 in dual match play and 34-3 overall in singles action.
Sophomore Prim Siripipat (Mexico, Mo.) then notched a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Raic at the sixth position and second-ranked Cargill posted the match-clinching victory with a 6-2, 6-5 win over 65th-ranked Alida Gallovits.
Earlier this season, Duke traveled to 18th-ranked Wake Forest and cruised to a 7-0 victory. Once again, Sunday's championship match is slated for 11:00 AM.
