Duke's birthday girl, Virada Nirapathpongporn, fired her second consecutive round of under par on Saturday as she turned in a 71 on her 19th birthday. She boasts a two-day total of 140 and heads into the final round with a commanding eight stroke lead over Kristin Tamulis of Florida State (148). Nirapathpongporn, a freshman native of Bangkok, Thailand, will try to become the third consecutive Duke freshman to claim ACC Championship honors-- Maria Garcia-Estrada (2000) and Beth Bauer (1999).
Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks on Nirapathpongporn's play, "Virada is playing some really solid golf. She has done some great work on her long game and is hitting the ball very well right now."
The rest of the Blue Devils continue to remain near the top as all five golfers are in the top 10 after two rounds of action.
Junior Candy Hannemann (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), freshman Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.), and senior Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn.) all shot rounds of 76 on Saturday and are in third, tied for fourth, and tied for sixth, respectively. Hannemann is one stroke out of second place with a 149 (73-76), while Hardin is at 151 (75-76), and Anderson has a two-day total of 152 (76-76). Sophomore Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) is in tied for 10th place after shooting a 79 (76-79=155).
Duke will begin teeing off at 8:50 AM on Sunday with Wake Forest and North Carolina.
