Freshman Virada Nirapathpongporn (Bangkok, Thailand) led Duke's charge on day one with a career-tying round of three-under-par, 69. She came out and shot a 35 on the first nine followed by a 34 to finish three-under-par. The under-par round by Nirapathpongporn gives her 10 rounds of par and under for the season, which leads the Blue Devils.
Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks on Nirapathpongporn's play, "She is quite a competitor and has been worried about her swing the last few days, but I told her she didn't have anything to worry about and she proved it to herself today."
Junior Candy Hannemann (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) turned in a 73 and is in second place behind Nirapathpongporn. Hannemann posted a 37 on the front nine followed by a 36 on the final nine. Freshman Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) is in fourth place after firing a 75, while senior Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn.) and sophomore Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) are in tied for fifth place with rounds of 76.
"I was happy with the way I played today," said Nirapathpongporn. "Today, I was able to go out and stick with my goals and plan even though I had a little problem on hole number two. I just stayed calm and said everything will come back into place and it did."
Rounding out the team results are North Carolina (312), Wake Forest (312), Maryland (314), Florida State (319), and N.C. State (335). The Blue Devils will tee off on Saturday beginning at 9:20 AM.
