Freshman Amanda Johnson, currently ranked 18th-ranked, posted a 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 victory over 86th-ranked Kate Pinchbeck to clinch the victory for the Blue Devils at the number three singles position. The victory for Johnson is her 18th-consecutive singles win.
"I am very happy with the victory," said Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth. "It was a very tough environment at UNC today. The crowd was extremely hostile and it seemed as if all the calls were going against us. We did a great job keeping our composure and if we didn't stay disciplined we wouldn't of won today."
The match began with Duke winning the doubles point by taking the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Freshman Ansley Cargill teamed with senior Kathy Sell at the second position to defeat Marlene Mejia/Julie Rotondi (8-4) and the No. 3 doubles duo of sophomore's Hillary Adams/Katie Granson downed Courtney Zalinski/Erin Niebling (8-6). At the first spot UNC's 32nd-ranked duo of Pinchbeck/Kendrick Bunn defeated third-ranked Megan Miller/Johnson (8-5).
Duke posted other singles victories at number two with 50th-ranked Miller defeating 57th-ranked Rotondi (6-2, 7-5) and 15th-ranked Sell knocking off Elina Bairos (6-2, 6-3) at four.
UNC received victories at No. 1 as 14th-ranked Mejia upset second-ranked Cargill (6-4, 7-6), Bunn defeated Granson (6-4, 6-3) at five, and Kristin Koenig got the victory over Adams after she was injured (1-4, retired). Adams ran into a pole and could not continue.
With the victory for Duke, the Blue Devils receive three Carlyle Cup points which even the overall standings at 17-17. The Carlyle Cup is a year long competition between Duke and UNC sponsored by Carlyle & Company out of Greensboro, N.C.
"The best thing about the victory today is we receive Carlyle Cup points," said Ashworth.
Duke will host South Alabama on Wednesday at 1:00 PM at the Duke Tennis Stadium, unless the inclement weather is in the area and they will move inside the Sheffield Tennis Center.
