Women's Golf Dominates Liz Murphey Classic

Athens, Ga. (April 1) - The top-ranked Duke women's golf team battled a wind advisory and extremely gusty conditions throughout the day to hold onto its 11-stroke lead April 1 to win the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic for the second consecutive year. Blue Devil senior Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn.) won individual honors for the first time in her four year career.

As a team, Duke turned in a card of 308, second best of the day, to finish the tournament with a three-round total of 902. Georgia also shot a 308 on Sunday to finish at 913, 11 strokes off the Blue Devils' pace. No. 3 Auburn had the best round of the day with a 306 to finish in third at 926. No. 9 Texas and No. 23 Wake Forest rounded out the top five with 928 and 932, respectively.

The victory for Duke was its sixth of the season out of eight tournaments played.

Anderson took home the individual title after firing a final round 73 and finished the three-day event with a five-over-par 221. She turned in individual rounds of 74, 74, and 73.

Other individual results for the Blue Devils include junior Candy Hannemann's (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) sixth top 10 finish of the season as she fired a final round 75 to finish in tied for eighth place (72-79-75=226, +10) and freshman Virada Nirapathpongporn's (Bangkok, Thailand) tied for 11th place finish after posting rounds of 72, 76, 79 to finish 11-over-par (227).

Freshman Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) and sophomore Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) finished tied for 23rd (233) and 34th (238) respectively.

Maria Garcia-Estrada, a sophomore from Tenerife, Spain, played as an individual and finished in tied for 26th (234).

Duke will be on the road once again this week as the Blue Devils will travel to the Bryan National Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C. on April 6-8.
