BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. (March 18) - Entering the final day of competition March 18 trailing 11th-ranked Georgia by two strokes, the Duke women's golf team, ranked first nationally, posted a final round best 296 to claim the Lady Gamecock Classic title for the fourth consecutive year. Duke captured the title by five strokes (887) over Georgia (892) at the par 72, 5,996-yard The University Club course.
Duke's three-day total of 887 is the second-lowest team score in Lady Gamecock history behind Florida's 885 in 1994. Rounding out the top five was Louisiana State (913), Wake Forest (913), and South Carolina (925).
Sophomore Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) led the Blue Devils on Sunday as she posted a final day best round of 71 to finish in third place overall (75-74-71=220, +4). Senior Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn.) was right behind her with a final round 74 and finished in fourth place (76-71-74=221, +5).
All five Blue Devils finished in the top 14 for the tournament, as junior Candy Hannemann (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) turned in a tied for sixth place finish (76-72-75=223, +7), freshman Virada Nirapathpongporn finished tied for 11th (75-75-76=226, +10), and freshman Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) posted a 14th-place finish (73-78-77=228, +12).
Sophomore Maria Garcia-Estrada (Tenerife, Spain) played as an individual for the tournament and finished in tied for 31st place with a three-day total of 240 (78-83-79=240, +24).
With cooler temperatures in the morning and a stiff breeze at times, the University Club played its toughest Sunday, allowing an 81.29 stroke average--almost two strokes higher than Saturday's 79.58 average score. The par 4, 405-yard No. 3 hole played the toughest at 4.90 strokes per player, while the No. 18 hole had a 5.85 average.
