BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. (March 17) - The Duke women's golf team, currently ranked first nationally, shot a team-best four-over-par 292 on March 17 to gain two strokes on 11th-ranked Georgia at the Lady Gamecock Classic in Blythewood, S.C. The classic is being played at The University Club, which is a par 72, 5,996-yards.
The Blue Devils have a two-day total of 591 and trail the host Georgia Bulldogs (589) with Louisiana State (601), Wake Forest (620), and South Carolina (620) rounding out the top five.
Duke senior Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn.) led the charge for the Blue Devils on Saturday as she posted a tournament-best round of 71 and is now in seventh place just two strokes off the individual lead (76-71=147, +3). The Blue Devils once again posted all five players in the top 16 individually with Candy Hannemann (76-72=148, +4) in tied for eighth, Kristina Engstrom (75-74=150, +5) in tied for 11th, Virada Nirapathpongporn (75-75=150, +6) in tied for 13th, and Leigh Anne Hardin (73-78=151, +7) in 16th place.
Sophomore All-America Maria Garcia-Estrada struggled on Saturday turning in an 83 and is in tied for 32nd (78-83=161, +17). She is playing as an individual this weekend.
Sunday's third and final round starts at 8:30 AM with teams teeing off from both the first and 10th tees.
The course played a little tougher Saturday with an average score of 79.58, 0.20 strokes high than Friday's 79.38 total. The par 4, 379-yard 12th hole played the toughest on the afternoon with a 4.63 average score, while the par 3, 176-yard second hole played the easiest with an average score of 3.15. The players enjoyed almost perfect weather Saturday, with sunny skies and temperatures in the high 60s.
