BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. (March 16) - The top-ranked Duke women's golf team posted a first round score of 299 and head into the second round in second place behind 11th-ranked Georgia (295) at the Lady Gamecock Classic in Blythewood, S.C. on March 16. The classic is being played at The University Club, which is a par 72, 5,996-yards.
The Blue Devils posted five players in the top 16 after day one with freshman Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) leading the way with a one over par 73 for tied for fifth place. Virada Nirapathpongporn (Bangkok, Thailand) and Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) each fired a 75 and are in tied for 11th place.
Junior Candy Hannemann (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) struggled on the back nine after playing even for the first nine holes and is in tied for 16th place with a 76 (36-40=76) along with senior Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn.).
Rounding out the top five teams are Louisiana State (301), Mississippi State (306), and Wake Forest (308). There is a four-way tie in the individual standings as Jennifer Perri (Furman), Meredith Duncan (LSU), Lina Thoren (Miss. St.), and Angela Jerman (Georgia) all fired a first round 72.
More than half the field (33 of 60) players had scores below 80 as the teams took advantage of the mid-afternoon temperatures in the mid-70s. The course played to an average score of 79.38 with the toughest hole being the par 4, 358-yard seventh hold, as it played to a 4.75 average. The easiest hole-the par 4, 312-yard 15th hole--played to a 4.15 stroke average.
