Duke shot a first round 294 and trails Arizona (293) by one stroke, while third-ranked Southern California (295), fourth-ranked Stanford (298), and eighth-ranked New Mexico State (302) round out the top five.
The Blue Devils own the top two individual positions as freshman Virada Nirapathpongporn (Bangkok, Thailand) opened with a 35-35=70 and junior Candy Hannemann (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) posted a 35-36=71. Former Duke standout Beth Bauer brought home the individual title in last year's tournament.
Sophomore Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) is in a tie for 20th place, after firing a day one score of 41-35=76 and senior Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn.) is in tied for 35th with a 37-40=77.
The second round of competition will begin at 8:00 AM with a shotgun start.
