DURHAM, N.C. - Duke University sophomores Rometra Craig and Crystal White did not make the road trip to Virginia and Georgetown on Wednesday and have decided to transfer to different schools after finishing the fall semester.
Both Craig and White were members of Duke's top-rated recruiting class by Athlon last season along with Alana Beard, Iciss Tillis and Vicki Krapohl.
"We are sad to see Rometra and Crystal leave," said Duke head coach Gail Goestenkors. "However, we want them to be happy, wish them only good things and hope they will be very successful in the future."
Craig, a 5-10 product of Portola Valley, Calif., had played in all seven games this season, while starting one. In 14.3 minutes of action, she averaged 5.1 points, 1.7 rebounds and shot 35 percent from the field.
"I wish Duke the best for the rest of the season, but this was a decision I had to make," said Craig. "It has been really hard being away from my family and I just want to be closer to home."
White had been bothered by an ankle injury for most of the preseason, but had come back to play in all seven games off the bench. The 6-5 native of Mount Clemens, Mich., was averaging 14.7 minutes and 6.1 points a game. Her 1.14 blocks a game ranked sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) statistics.
"I am making the decision that is right for me," said White. "I enjoyed my time at Duke and wish the team all the best, but this isn't the right place for me right now."
Neither Craig or White have made a decision where they will be transferring to.
Duke, which is currently ranked 11th in the Associated Press and ninth in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, is left with a roster of eight solid players-- senior Krista Gingrich, junior's Sheana Mosch and Michele Matyasovsky, sophomore's Beard, Tillis and Krapohl and freshmen Monique Currie and Wynter Whitley.
"I am very excited about the eight players who are committed to this program in helping us attain all our goals," said Goestenkors. "We understand that this is a tough loss, however, I believe it will only serve to make us stronger."
The Blue Devils (5-2) will open ACC play tonight at Virginia (5-2) at 7:30 PM.
