Duke Head Coach Gail Goestenkors
"I'm happy to come away with the win, but I'm not pleased with the way we played. We had a tremendous week of practice. We had three of our best practices of the year this week. We had great intensity, focus, execution. I was so proud of the way the team practiced this week during finals. But I felt like everything we saw during the week of practice vanished, especially during the first half of the game tonight. It was a little frustrating. I thought we did a much better job in the second half. We came out with much better focus. Give Greensboro a lot of credit. I've always had the utmost respect for Lynne Agee. I think she's one of the best coaches in the country as far as making her team execute. I thought they did a good job with their execution and caused us a lot of problems. I think this was a good game for us. They tested us. They wouldn't go away, especially in the first half. They forced us to play harder in the second half which is what we really needed to do."
On the amount of turnovers Duke had: "We talked about it post game. Turnovers are going to happen, but you can't have two, three and four turnovers in a row. All of our turnovers seemed to come in bunches and when that happens, that results in an opponent making a run. We did not play a very smart game tonight. We had several bunches of turnovers. We fouled twice with less than five seconds on the shot clock. We wanted to take the last shot of the half and we shot with 10 seconds left in the half. There were several three-point plays where we fouled and they scored. It just wasn't a very smart basketball game for us."
On Alana Beard's value to the team: "I think that Alana's defense really sets the tone for us. She puts such great pressure on the ball and plays with such passion. Many times, I think that's contagious for us. I thought she came out very focused. We got a big lead and then when we subbed her out, we just all of a sudden lost our focus for some reason and we're better than that. We'll have to improve in that area."
UNC-Greensboro Head Coach Lynne Agee:
"Obviously we came in to play one of the best teams in the country tonight and we knew that was a formidable task for us. I felt there were some positive things. We tried hard not to look at the scoreboard. In the first half I thought that we had an outstanding comeback. I felt that we played without being scared. We made mistakes, we turned the ball over, but I think we did some very good things. We rebounded with them, which clearly was a goal. We knew we didn't stand a prayer to perform at all if we couldn't stay on the boards and the numbers are great. I thought we just worked very hard. Our effort on the boards was tremendous and if we have that kind of effort the rest of the year, we'll be in real good shape. I think the other big plus in looking at the sheet is the 25 free throws, so we clearly didn't back down. We were not scared and intimidated. We took the hits, we were aggressive with the ball, we had good control of the ball and we got to the foul line. Those two things were big pluses. I'm proud of our effort."
"Obviously we were mismatched all over the floor, but I thought our defensive effort was outstanding. We moved very well, we communicated well, we had a good feel for what [Duke was] trying to do. We did a great job getting back into the game at the half, but the three point streak just killed us. We didn't want to match up in a man, and they got hot against the zone and hit several threes, and of course that was the end of the game right there. But on our side, that's where we could have folded our tents and stopped playing and it could have been really ugly. We did not do that. We tried to maintain our intensity and play through our mistakes and just kept plugging away on defense. I was proud of that."
UNC-Greensboro's Brianne Dodgen:
"Sometimes it takes us a little while to get into a big game like this. We just have to be patient, which I thought we were. We just helped each other try to take our time. Coach said not to rush it, that we had enough time on the clock to come back step-by-step and every time down the floor, try to chip away at the score."
