DURHAM, N.C. - The latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings were released on Tuesday with four members of the Duke women's tennis team earning recognition.
In the singles rankings, freshman Kelly McCain (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) is third, while junior Julie DeRoo (Ecully, France) is 15th, sophomore Amanda Johnson (Bettendorf, Iowa) is 26th and freshman Saras Arasu (Tampa, Fla.) is 90th.
McCain had an impressive fall campaign, advancing to the semifinals of the Riviera All-American and the Omni Hotels National Collegiate Indoor Championships, while recording an 8-3 record. She knocked off four ranked opponents, including three players in the top eight nationally. DeRoo, a transfer from Ole Miss., posted a 10-3 record after advancing to the finals of the Southeast Regional Championships and winning the consolation bracket at the Riviera All-American.
Arasu also turned in an impressive fall, advancing to the quarterfinals of qualifying at the Riviera All-American by winning five consecutive matches. She finished with a 5-4 record with two losses coming against 27th-ranked Carolina Mayorga of Kentucky. Johnson struggled to a 4-5 record, after being ranked ninth in the preseason.
In the doubles rankings, the Blue Devils have two teams ranked nationally-- DeRoo/McCain is ninth and Susie Abromeit/Johnson is 38th.
The tandem of DeRoo/McCain notched a 7-4 record and advanced to the semifinals of the Southeast Regional Championships, while Abromeit (Boca Raton, Fla.)/Johnson were 4-2 in the fall.
Duke will open the spring season on Jan. 25 in Minneapolis, Minn., against Marquette at 1:00 PM.
