FARMERS BRANCH, TEXAS - Freshman Kelly McCain advanced to the second round of the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Thursday at the Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas.
McCain, a product of Wesley Chapel, Fla., knocked off 93rd-ranked Erin Burdette of Stanford (2-6, 7-6, 6-3) and will next take on 19th-ranked Vladka Uhlirova of Texas at 1:00 PM on Friday. In other singles action, sophomore Amanda Johnson (Bettendorf, Iowa) fell to Sarah Borwell of Houston (6-7, 1-6) and junior Julie DeRoo (Ecully, France) lost to Marine Piriou of Northwestern (2-6, 6-2, 6-7). Johnson and DeRoo will play Friday in the consolation bracket against Alexis Gordon of Florida and Jessica Rush of Northwestern, respectively.
In doubles action, Duke's 37th-ranked duo of DeRoo/McCain received an at-large bid and knocked off second-seeded Linda Faltynkova/Katia Kolodynaka of Oklahoma State (8-6), but then fell 8-3 to Petya Marinova/Sara Walker of UCLA.
The Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship is the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament and the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season.
In the preseason singles rankings, Duke's Johnson is ninth, DeRoo is 21st and McCain is 49th in singles.
