Duke Wins Fifth Consecutive Franklin Street Trust Title; Engstrom Wins Individually

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - For the fifth consecutive year, the Duke women's golf team brought home the Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational on Sunday at the Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Blue Devils fired a final round best 296 and won by 17 strokes over host North Carolina.
Duke, ranked No. 1 in the Golf World rankings, finished the 54-hole invitational with an 894 with North Carolina (911), Vanderbilt (914), Wake Forest (921) and Georgia (922) rounding out the top five.
In the individual competition, junior Kristina Engstrom recorded a tournament best round of 70 on Sunday to win her second collegiate tournament with a three-over-par 219 (73-76-70). The native of Djursholm, Sweden, posted three birdies and only one bogey in the final round and Engstrom's 219 equalled her collegiate best 54-hole total. She won by three strokes over Vanderbilt's Nicki Cutler (225).
Junior Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) and freshman Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh (Lausanne, Switzerland) each notched top 10 finishes with a tied for sixth and tied for ninth finish, respectively. Hardin turned in a 75 on Sunday and ended with a 73-78-75=226 (+10), while Aazam-Zanganeh posted a 78 in the final round to finish with an 11-over-par 227 (72-77-78).
Virada Nirapathpongporn rebounded from her worst collegiate round (81) on Friday with a 74 on the final two days to finish tied for 14th overall. The native of Bangkok, Thailand, turned in an 81-74-74=229 (+13). Junior Maria Garcia Estrada (Tenerife, Spain) concluded the invitational with a 77 on Sunday and finished tied for 27th (75-82-7=234, +18).
Duke will next travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to play in the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate on Oct. 12-14. The tournament will be played at the Gettysvue Country Club and hosted by Tennessee.
