Top-Ranked Duke Leads Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Behind an even par round of 72 by freshman Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh, the top-ranked Duke women's golf team leads by seven strokes after the first round of action at the Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational on Friday at the Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Duke turned in a five-over-par 293 on day one and leads host North Carolina and Furman (300) by seven strokes. Rounding out the top 10 teams are Vanderbilt (301), Wake Forest (309), Kentucky (309), Georgia (310), UNC Wilmington (311), Florida State (313) and Memphis (314) round out the top 10 teams.
The native of Lausanne, Switzerland, Aazam-Zanganeh turned in her best round of her early collegiate career on Friday and is in tied for second place overall. She notched 36's on both the front and back nine to finish the day. She is a four-time Swiss Juniors and Ladies National Champion.
Sophomore Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) and junior Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) each fired rounds of 73 and are in tied for fourth overall. Both turned the first nine two-under par, but struggled on the back nine with a 39. Maria Garcia Estrada, a junior native of Tenerife, Spain, posted a 75 and is tied for 14th. Sophomore Virada Nirapathpongporn finished the day with an 81 (T-51st).
Duke is looking to claim its fifth consecutive Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational title and on Saturday will tee off from 11:10 to 11:50 on hole number one. The teams will play 18 holes on Saturday and finish the invitational on Sunday with another 18 holes.
