PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. - Seven members of the Duke women's tennis team will be traveling to Pacific Palisades, Calif., for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Riviera All-American from Oct. 6-14 at the Riviera Tennis Club.
The Riviera All-American is the toughest hardcourt event of the fall collegiate season with a field that features the top 10 ranked singles players in the preseason edition of the ITA rankings. The tournament will feature prequalifying and qualifying tournaments as well as a doubles competition. Prequalifying takes place Oct. 6-7 on the campus of UCLA and qualifying on Oct. 9-10 at the Riviera Tennis Club. The main draw will be Oct. 11-14 at Riviera.
Duke will have three players-- junior Hillary Adams (New York, N.Y.), freshman Saras Arasu (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Susie Abromeit (Boca Raton, Fla.) competing in the prequalifying singles beginning Saturday and three players in the main draw singles-- sophomore Amanda Johnson (Bettendorf, Iowa), freshman Kelly McCain (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and junior Julie DeRoo (Ecully, France).
In doubles action, the duo of Adams and junior Olga Gvozdenovic (Glenview, Ill.) will participate in prequalifying Saturday, while the teams of McCain/DeRoo and Johnson/Abromeit will each begin play in the qualifying round.
The Blue Devils boast three ranked singles players-- Johnson (No. 9), DeRoo (No. 21) and McCain (No. 49). In doubles, Duke has two duos ranked-- Johnson/Abromeit (No. 30) and McCain/DeRoo (No. 37).
During the season, the ITA hosts three national collegiate championships with the Riviera All-American being the first one of the season. The second is the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Dallas and the final is the NCAA Championships.
