WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Junior Julie DeRoo defeated two ranked opponents Sunday to advance to the singles semifinals of the Omni Hotels Southeast Regional Championship played on the campus of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.
DeRoo, a product of Ecully, France, knocked off 12th-seeded/81st-ranked Agnes Wiski of Tennessee (6-3, 6-3) and fifth-seeded/27th-ranked Carolina Mayorga of Kentucky (6-4, 3-6, 6-2). DeRoo is currently ranked 21st in the preseason rankings and has registered an 8-1 record this season. She will take on 13th-ranked Janet Bergman of Wake Forest on Monday at 9:00 AM.
Senior Ioana Plesu's excellent run ended Sunday as the Saint-Foy, Quebec, Canada native, fell to 16th-ranked Alison Ojeda of Tennessee (3-6, 7-6, 5-7).
In doubles action, Duke's third-seeded duo of Kelly McCain/DeRoo fell to 10th-ranked Mayorga/Witten of Kentucky (4-8) in the semifinals.
Duke will next play in the ITA Indoor Nationals from Nov. 8-11 in Dallas, Texas.
